Whether you’re new to the saddle or have some level of experience, you can always benefit from proper preparation before leaving for your horse riding holiday. Here are some crucial questions to ask yourself before you set off.
1. Is your fitness level good?
Horse riding can be tiring and will require you to use muscles that often don’t get used in other daily activities. The worst thing that could happen is you turn up and are unable to fully appreciate your holiday because your fitness isn’t up to scratch. So introduce or be creative with your weekly workout routine and incorporate a range of cardiovascular activities like running, rowing and cycling with some weighted machines in the gym.
2. Have you spent time in the saddle?
To get the most out of your holiday, try to get in some horse riding practice before you leave. If you’re a beginner then go for a taster day, or if you’re more experienced then don’t neglect to go over your skills. This will help you get the most out of your holiday itself.
3. Have you got your anti-inflammatories?
Hours in the saddle may leave some muscles a little achy, so prepare by getting some suitable over-the-counter medication. Herbal remedies could also be a good idea, but if not then paracetamol and ibuprofen will help.
4. Are you going to the right destination?
If you’re new to horse riding, then booking your first horse riding holiday somewhere hot and less forgiving like Spain or Africa may be too much. Consider your options beforehand and maybe choose UK horse riding holidays if it’s your first time.
5. Have you packed suitably?
Comfort and practicality will be crucial so packing your favourite pair of jeans is not necessarily the way forward. Instead, opt for flexible tracksuit bottoms and a comfortable t-shirt and jacket. Flat shoes like trainers aren’t best for horse riding, instead, it’s better to bring boots or Wellingtons; something with a slight heel is always useful. Also, be sure to remove any jewellery that is baggy or is going to get caught easily.
